Morrison Foerster Shortlisted for the Financial Times 2024 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards
Morrison Foerster has been shortlisted by the Financial Times (FT) for its 2024 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards. The awards recognize the most innovative lawyers, law firms and in-house legal departments in the region. FT, in partnership with RSGI, a global think-tank for the legal industry, compiles shortlists of the top-ranked submissions for each section of the report.
Morrison Foerster was shortlisted in the Innovation in Responsible Business category for its work assisting Justice Centre Hong Kong in creating a database that summarizes and analyzes case law relating to immigration detention in Hong Kong. Following the completion of the project, the database has become an important resource for Justice Centre Hong Kong and other practitioners who advise and represent torture survivors and refugees seeking legal remedies for their detention. By expanding the database to include habeas corpus cases brought by detained immigrants, it will now serve as a holistic central resource in the fight to ensure that the thousands of people migrating to Hong Kong are able to access the protection and basic services they need. The database will improve the ability of Justice Centre Hong Kong and its partners to deliver effective legal remedies for former and current detainees and will inform future advocacy and litigation work. The expansive project lasted an entire year and required 800 hours of pro bono work from the Morrison Foerster team.
The project is led by global co-chair of our Private Equity practice Marcia Ellis, who was previously named by FT as the Most Innovative Legal Practitioner in the Asia-Pacific region at the FT 2023 Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards, and associate Sarah Luo. They are supported by associates including Ferdinand Loo, Ziqi Qi, Julia Lee, Katrina Tsoi, Yilong Luo, Letian Ge, Grace Fung, Chloe Chen, Stephanie So and Yiman Zhang, as well as trainee solicitors including Laura Sun, Cori Ling, Winnie Lam and Cyrus Ye.
FT and its research partner RSGI have devised a unique methodology to rank lawyers based on innovation. Law firms and company in-house legal teams are invited to submit their nominations, which are then thoroughly researched through telephone interviews, questionnaires and reviews. Market experts are also called in to assess the submissions and the research.
Winners will be announced at the awards event at the Asia Society in Hong Kong on May 16, 2024.
