Daily Journal Names MoFo Partner Bonnie Lau to Top 100 Lawyers List
Morrison Foerster partner Bonnie Lau has once again been named to Daily Journal’s 2024 list of the Top 100 Lawyers in California, after being selected in 2022. Daily Journal compiles the list annually, recognizing the outstanding lawyers in the region and highlighting their successes from the past year.
Bonnie is the co-head of Morrison Foerster’s San Francisco Litigation department. She stands out among her peers as a formidable litigator and trial lawyer defending class actions, multidistrict litigations, and enforcement actions. She has represented companies in antitrust and related complex litigation involving claims of price-fixing, wage-fixing, no-poach conduct, output suppression, monopolization, refusal to deal, predatory pricing, and group boycott, and prosecuted antitrust counterclaims in patent infringement and IP matters.
Bonnie has tried several bench and jury trials to verdict, and is one of an exclusive cohort of attorneys to have first-chaired multiple antitrust class action jury trials and reached successful resolutions.
Some of her recent successes include serving as lead trial counsel for a Japanese technology client in an antitrust price-fixing cartel class action that was tried twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulted in a favorable mid-trial settlement of only $5 million, a remarkable outcome given the client’s potential $1.3 billion exposure in treble damages. Bonnie also achieved a landmark victory, securing a jury verdict of $15.5 million in damages, including $11 million in punitive damages, for pro bono clients in their decade-long pursuit of justice for human rights abuses under the Torture Victim Protection Act. In this case, she notably persuaded the Court to provide an implicit bias jury instruction and cited it in her closing argument, advancing the law in this space.
Beyond her client work, Bonnie devotes herself to promoting diversity and inclusion in the legal community, serving as vice chair of the ABA Antitrust Section’s Women.Connected, co-chair of the Women’s Leadership Network for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, and board member of the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Justice and Diversity Center.
Profiles for all the winning lawyers have been featured in a special Top 100 Lawyers issue of Daily Journal published on September 4, 2024.
