Carrie H. Cohen spoke to The New York Times regarding Senator Robert Menendez’s federal bribery trial and his defense strategy that hinges on blaming his wife. Carrie spoke to the parallels between Senator Menendez’s case and the 2014 trial of Bob McDonnell, a former Republican governor of Virginia who was tried with his wife on charges that they accepted more than $170,000 in loans and gifts from an executive of a nutritional supplements company in return for political favors.
Carrie said Senator Menendez’s defense appears right out of the McDonnell playbook. Both men, she noted, had a wife who “liked finer things and finer cars,” and each man claimed his wife acted without his knowledge.
“We’ve seen how this plays out,” Carrie said. “It is a good defense to blame the spouse.”
