Alja Poler De Zwart has spoken to Thomson Reuters Practical Law as part of two video briefings that provide an overview of the EU Whistleblowing Directive.
In this first video briefing, Alja provides a background to the Directive and discusses the aims of the Directive, who the Directive protects, which organizations are affected and when they must comply with the Directive, and how organizations should prepare for it.
“Before the Directive there was no consistent approach regarding the rights of whistleblowers, or regarding the obligations of organizations and employers. There was a patchwork of laws and regulatory guidance. Some countries had comprehensive whistleblowing laws, for example, the Dutch law, which is quite similar to certain parts of the Directive. But other countries had either no whistleblowing laws in place or limited regulatory guidance.”
