Cybersecurity Is a Male-Dominated Field, but Cybersecurity Law Doesn’t Have to Be

Miriam Wugmeister spoke to LegalTech News about the gender imbalance in cybersecurity, and whether this will translate to cybersecurity law.
When Miriam entered the field in the early 2000s, she felt like she was surrounded by women, but noticed a shift as the market gained steam and most new hires at law firms seemed to be men.
“What happened is, as the field got hotter and as it became more technical, you started seeing men coming in,” Miriam said.
She added: “The question is whether or not it’s a value in your organization. Is it something that your organization is open to listening and hearing and encouraging different types of people in a broader variety of roles? I mean, it’s gender, it’s race, it’s sexual orientation, it’s all those things. I believe, particularly when you’re in an area that is as new and dynamic as privacy and data security, you need lots of perspectives. I think the practices that are more homogeneous are just not as effective.”
