"Of course, earning the trust of the right people is important to any promotion," Richard said. "But at our firm, I think that good lawyering, firm-mindedness, and fairness are all key considerations. The leader of a group has to be more than a talking head; he or she must be competent within their practice area, or no one will trust their guidance. And one also must be firm-minded and fair—a steward for others, not yourself. Otherwise, the practice group chair becomes less of a leader and more of a dictator and opportunist."
