MoFo Celebrates Black History Month and Historical Milestones
MoFo Celebrates Black History Month and Historical Milestones
This year, MoFo will be honoring some of the most significant milestones in our nation’s history and the influential men and women who played a role in the fight for civil rights. These milestones include the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870), which granted black men the right to vote after the Civil War, the centennial of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment (1920), extending the right to vote to African-American women, and the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance.
In addition to the events listed below, the firm is launching a social media campaign with the theme of “Celebrating Milestones,” where we’ll hear from our diverse lawyers about how identity has shaped and impacted their careers.
February 11, 2020 – Stacey Abrams Networking Lunch & Presentation
The New York office will be welcoming political leader and author Stacey Abrams for a Networking lunch and presentation. Abrams made history and captured the nation’s attention as the first black woman to become the gubernatorial nominee for a major party in any state, going on to win more votes than any other Democrat in Georgia’s history. She will give a short presentation about “The 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment and Where We Are Today,” followed by a moderated question and answer session.
February 18, 2020 – Presentation by Poet Chiyuma Elliot
Assistant Professor of African American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and poet Chiyuma (Chi) Elliot will visit the San Francisco office to discuss ”Literature of the Harlem Renaissance: Citizenship and National Belonging.”
February 25, 2020 – Partner Panel Discussion
We will have a partner panel discussion in our Washington, D.C. office, featuring partners Obrea Poindexter and Natalie Fleming Nolen and moderated by associate Crystal Kaldjob. They will discuss their careers and how their identities have shaped their professional paths.
