In an article authored for Global Data Review, Alja Poler De Zwart and Marijn Storm discuss and compare cookie regulations in the UK, EU, and other non-EU countries:
“While the legal requirements are quite clear in the EU and the UK, many countries outside the EU lack specific laws for cookies and similar technologies. Instead, their general data protection laws may only apply to personal information that is collected using such technologies. For example, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner uses cookies as an example in its guidance when it describes the various possibilities for collecting personal information. In other countries such as Russia, case law may provide the relevant requirements.
“Organisations should therefore note that even if countries do not have specific laws dedicated to the use of cookies and similar technologies, there may still be relevant rules that flow from local regulatory guidance or case law. We examine some of these rules in this article.”
