Tim is the Managing Partner of the Palo Alto Office and a partner in the Emerging Companies and Venture Capital Group. He specializes in representing startup companies and venture capital investors in corporate and securities matters.In his practice, Tim advises startups from formation through acquisition or initial public offering in matters including venture capital financing, debt financing, equity incentive compensation, corporate governance and technology development (including licensing, joint development, distribution, and other technology transfer matters). He also represents venture capital firms, strategic corporate investors, and angel investors in their investments in startup companies.Tim specializes in modeling complex capital structures, financing scenarios and liquidity events, helping entrepreneurs and investors analyze possibilities and understand consequences of various transaction structures. Tim represents startups and investors in a variety of technology sectors, including consumer and enterprise software, financial services technologies, wearable computing, semiconductor design, healthcare technologies, consumer retail and transportation.In 2015, Tim founded the firm’s ScaleUp Speaker Series, an ongoing, ten session series for entrepreneurs on the legal issues they will face over the lifetimes of their startups.Tim is most proud of his work on behalf of at-risk Afghan allies in connection with Operation Allies Refuge and was recognized by Human Rights First as a Pro Bono Star.Prior to practicing law, Tim designed, programmed, and implemented software systems for clients in the financial services industry.

Lisa N. Silverman focuses on patent portfolio management and strategic patent counseling in the areas of chemistry and life sciences. She has extensive experience in securing U.S. and foreign patent protection for pharmaceutical products and a deep understanding of patent lifecycle management and strategies for maximizing patent term. In addition to pharmaceuticals, Dr. Silverman also works with clients in the areas of clean technology, bioassays, and medical devices.Dr. Silverman routinely represents clients in both investor- and target-side due diligence, including patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments. She has a keen interest in the intersection of patent and regulatory considerations for pharmaceutical products and medical devices, and she has prepared numerous applications for patent term extension.Dr. Silverman has represented companies of all sizes, from start-ups to multi-national corporations, and provides advice tailored to each client’s unique business needs. She has worked with large companies to ensure robust patent protection for marketed drug products. She has worked closely with several mid-size companies to expand patent protection and mitigate potential infringement risks as lead drug candidates have moved through clinical development toward commercialization. She has also advised small companies on securing early foundational patents.Prior to entering the legal field, Dr. Silverman obtained her Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, where she was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Her doctoral research in the laboratory of Professor Steven G. Boxer focused on spectroscopic investigation of charge transfer reactions in organic, organometallic, and biological molecules. Dr. Silverman received her B.A. summa cum laude, in chemistry and political science from Barnard College, where she performed synthetic organic chemistry research in the laboratory of Professor Christian M. Rojas. She also studied alpha-helical folding of small peptides in the laboratory of Professor Ronald Breslow at Columbia University.Dr. Silverman received her J.D. from Stanford Law School. She was a member of the Organizations and Transactions Group of the Stanford Law School Mills Legal Clinic, where she provided governance advice and drafted contracts and management materials for Northern California non-profit organizations.

Lisa Silverman

Muzamil Huq represents clients in the protection and enforcement of U.S. and non-U.S. trademark matters and other IP transactions. He has significant experience counseling clients in the technology, healthcare, consumer products, entertainment, and fashion industries in connection with the clearance and registration of trademarks, management of trademark portfolios of all sizes, enforcement of valuable trademark rights, and defense of trademarks and branding.Muzamil negotiates and drafts trademark and copyright license agreements and other general commercial contracts, and advises on intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions, including due diligence. He also provides advice to clients regarding competitor false advertising issues. Muzamil counsels clients in the fields of software and technology, healthcare, consumer products, advertising, entertainment, fashion, apparel and related accessories.Muzamil is a member of INTA’s Unreal Campaign Committee. The Unreal Campaign Committee advances INTA’s consumer awareness initiative designed to educate young consumers about the importance of trademarks and brands and the dangers of counterfeit products.Muzamil earned his B.A. in media studies and studio art from Pomona College and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a member of The Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts.Muzamil is admitted to practice in California and New York.<h4>Representative Experience</h4>Muzamil is trademark counsel to a number of companies representing a wide range of industries.
