Judgment and Mercy is the first biography of The Honorable Irving R. Kaufman, who served on the Second Circuit from 1961 to 1992. As a new, 40-year-old district judge in 1951, Judge Kaufman presided at the espionage trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and sentenced them to death. This summer marks the 70th anniversary of their executions — the first and only for espionage during peacetime in American history.
