Internet of Things 2021: Everything is Connected

Industrial and Commercial workplace monitors track all employee movement; exercise and healthcare devices on and in our bodies record and save intimate details of our lives; cameras everywhere, some with facial recognition, are recording us; and even our homes can record our movements and conversations. Often these devices have little if any security controls presenting enormous cybersecurity and privacy risks. All these devices communicate this information to databases which are targeted treasure troves of hackers. The data services are supposed to be governed by the “subscription agreement” or “service agreement.” How can you effectively communicate who is collecting (or receiving) the information, why it is being collected, where is it maintained and how it is used. Are post purchase “click wrap” agreements the still proper mechanism for consent? Can new technologies, such as blockchain, provide new methods to control and manage security concerns on IoT devices and confirm assent? Our panel will dig into these interesting and uncomfortable issues and provide practical insight.
