Mr. Danis specializes in the trial and arbitration of intellectual property disputes, including patent and trade secret matters, as well as other complex civil actions. Mr. Danis also represents clients in product liability actions and corporate internal investigations. He has handled significant matters in the fields of software, hardware, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, energy, and food products.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Danis clerked for Judge Lawrence W. Pierce of the United States Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, New York. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mr. Danis is a member of the California State Bar. He is also a registered gaikokuho-jimu-bengoshi and a member of the Daini Tokyo Bar Association. He is a past Director of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and a former Vice-President of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program. He was a guest speaker at an annual meeting of the San Diego and Orange County Intellectual Property Law Associations and frequently lectures on issues relating to intellectual property, arbitration, and internal investigations.



Representative Matters
  • Lead counsel to H. J. Heinz Company in a trade secret and correction of patent inventorship action. Successfully moved to dismiss the action based on plaintiff's lack of standing. The Federal Circuit unanimously affirmed the dismissal. Watson v. Heinz , 101 Fed. Appx. 823 (Fed. Cir. 2004).
  • Lead counsel to CalEnergy in patent infringement case. Defeated a preliminary injunction, with the District Court finding that CalEnergy had raised substantial questions as to the validity of plaintiff's patent and the existence of infringement. The case settled thereafter. Benesi v. Calenergy , No. 01 CV 1428 (S.D. Cal. 2002).
  • In biotechnology matters, counsel to Yoshitomi Pharmaceuticals in a two-week arbitration involving a royalty dispute on recombinant albumin; counsel to Alpha Therapeutics in a patent infringement action regarding purification of intravenous gamma globulin; and lead counsel to AntiCancer in a patent infringement action.
  • Counsel to Trilogy Development Group in software patent infringement action. Obtained summary judgment of invalidity under the on-sale bar rule. Trilogy Development Group v. Teknowledge , 1996 U.S. Dist LEXIS 13095 (N.D. Cal. 1996).
  • Lead trial counsel for the State Bar of California in a First Amendment challenge to Bar expenditures on certain programs and activities.
