Alex Chartove is a partner in Morrison & Foerster’s Northern Virginia office with over 20 years of intellectual property law experience. His practice focuses on intellectual property prosecution, litigation, counseling and licensing in a variety of advanced technologies. These technologies include medical devices, biomedical implants, robotics, semiconductors, software design, telecommunications, computer peripherals, encryption, coding and information theory, display technologies, optical networking, and financial services and transactional business methods.
Mr. Chartove has written and lectured on many intellectual property topics. His numerous books and articles on patent law have been published in the U.S., Asia and Europe.
He is a member of the bars of California, New York, Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Represented numerous companies in patent-related matters over the past twenty years, including Exide, General Electric, National Geographic, Nextel and Ricoh.
- Helped numerous companies create patent portfolios designed to maximize value.
- Essex Corporation — prepared and secured a comprehensive U.S. and foreign patent portfolio directed to advanced optoelectronic imaging and signal processing technologies.
- Light BioScience LLC — prepared and secured a comprehensive U.S. and foreign patent portfolio directed to non-thermal, light-based skin rejuvenation technologies.
- Represented various clients in patent cases before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and various U.S. district courts. Representative reported decisions include:
